Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Milieu du XX ème siècle, vers 1960/1970, Crochet à suspension en bois sculpté. Cette pièce très stylisée trouve son origine dans les populations IATMUL/SAWOS, aire stylistique du cours Moyen du Sepik. Réalisé en bois et colorants minéraux, ce crochet à suspensionprésente en figure centrale d'une tête ancestrale évoquant l'esprit tutélaire Waken. Ainsi, les hommes cherchaient la faveur avant une opération deguerre en accrochant des offrandes. Ce type de crochet n'était pas suspendumais déposé dans la maison des hommes. Cet objet votif degrande qualité est présenté sur un support spécialement réalisé pour le mettreen évidence.
Bon état de conservation, usures normales.

Papua New Guinea, mid-20th century, circa 1960/1970, carved wooden hanging hook. This highly stylised piece originates from the IATMUL/SAWOS peoples, a stylistic area in the middle Sepik River region. Made of wood and mineral dyes, this hanging hook features a central figure of an ancestral head evoking the guardian spirit Waken. Men sought favour before going into battle by hanging offerings on it. This type of hook was not hung up but placed in the men's house. This high-quality votive object is presented on a specially designed stand to show it off to its best advantage.
