Indonésie, île de Java, fin du XIXème siècle - début du XXème siècle, très joli et ancien masque du théâtre du Râmâyana en bois polychrome figurant le personnage du démon Rakjsasa. Une languette de cuir, plus récente car remplacée à cause des usures et attestant d’un usage important de la pièce, est visible au revers. Elle permettait au danseur de garder le masque sur son visage sans le tenir avec ses mains en mordant la languette.
Pièce particulièrement bien exécutée, tant dans la sculpture que dans la qualité de la peinture.
Hauteur du masque 19 cm (28 cm avec son socle).
Le témoin d’échelle sur la dernière photographie est un petit modèle d’un briquet d’une marque connue de tous.

Indonesia, island of Java, late 19th century - early 20th century, very attractive old mask from the Râmâyana theatre in polychrome wood depicting the demon Rakjsasa. A leather tab, more recent as it has been replaced due to wear and tear and attests to the extensive use of the piece, is visible on the reverse. It enabled the dancer to keep the mask on his face without holding it with his hands by biting the tab.
This is a particularly well executed piece, both in terms of the carving and the quality of the painting.
