Andrée SIMON, peintre née en 1896 et décédée en 1981. Originaire de Normandie, elle fut quelques années professeur de dessin puis se consacra totalement à la peinture en installant son premier atelier à Rennes à partir de 1928. Son style est alors figuratif et très cézanien. Elle se lie d’amitié avec André Lhote, qui lui enseigna la peinture à Mirmande dans la Drôme, avec qui elle découvre le village de Gordes, un véritable coup de cœur. Avec son mari elle y achète une maison et y vivra pendant quarante ans. Andrée Simon et André Lhote sont ensuite rejoints par de nombreux artistes dont certains de renommée internationale comme Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall, Jean Degottex, etc…
Andrée Simon oriente ensuite son art vers l’abstraction. C’est
pour elle une démarche naturelle et évidente. Elle est inspirée en cela par
l’observation des arbres, des nuages et de tous les effets lumière. Cet art
abstrait, dans un premier temps géométrique devient par la suite lyrique. Mais
rien n’est laissé au hasard. Andrée Simon « construit » ses œuvres
selon une démarche artistique très personnelle. Elle laisse libre cours à ses
émotions tout en les maîtrisant par un processus issu de son travail et de la
méthode qu’elle s’impose. De cette façon elle est remarquée par les
amateurs éclairés, les critiques d’art avec lesquels elle entretient d’étroites
relations comme Belon, Degand, Estienne.
N’oublions pas qu’elle est femme dans un milieu misogyne. Le
monde de l’art est avant tout un univers d’hommes. Et pourtant, par son talent
et son travail, elle s’imposera comme une évidence : une artiste
incontournable au talent si particulier.
Cette superbe composition, une gouache sur papier de 1971 est
annotée au dos « gouache 71 ». Elle provient du fonds d’atelier de l’artiste
précieusement conservé par Martin Nicolas de Barry, son petit-fils, qui nous
fait l’honneur de nous en ouvrir les portes pour que nous puissions faire
découvrir, à notre façon, les superbes peintures, gouaches et aquarelles de
Andrée Simon.

Andrée SIMON, painter born in 1896 and
died in 1981. Originally from Normandy, she was a drawing teacher for a few
years and then devoted herself entirely to painting by setting up her first
workshop in Rennes in 1928. His style is then figurative and very Cesanian. She
befriends André Lhote, who taught her painting in Mirmande in the Drôme region,
with whom she discovers the village of Gordes, a real crush. She and her
husband bought a house there and lived for forty years. Andrée Simon and André
Lhote are then joined by many artists including some of international renown
like Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall, Jean Degottex, etc...
Andrée Simon then oriented her art
towards abstraction. For her, this is a natural and obvious approach. She is
inspired by the observation of trees, clouds and all light effects. This
abstract art, initially geometric, later becomes lyrical. But nothing is left
to chance. Andrée Simon «builds» his works according to a very personal
artistic approach. She gives free rein to her emotions while mastering them
through a process resulting from her work and the method that she imposes. In
this way she is noticed by the enlightened amateurs, the art critics with whom
she has close relations like Belon, Degand, Estienne.
Let’s not forget that she is a woman in
a misogynist milieu. The art world is above all a man’s universe. And yet,
through her talent and work, she will be obvious: an essential artist with such
a special talent.
This superb composition, a gouache on
paper from 1971 is annotated on the back «gouache 71». It comes from the
artist’s workshop fund, which is treasured by Martin Nicolas de Barry, his
grandson, who is honoring us by opening the doors so that we can discover, in
our own way, the beautiful paintings, gouaches and watercolors of Andrée Simon.
