Japon, début de la période Edo, XVIIème-XVIIIème siècle, très ancien et superbe masque en bois polychrome du théâtre du Noh représentant le personnage de Tenman Tenjin (ou Sugawara no Michizane), un poète, intellectuel et haut administrateur au sein de la Cour à l'époque Heian, qui fut maltraité et exilé qui obtint une vengeance spectaculaire au-delà de sa tombe quand il fut déifié. Il devint le patron-dieu de l'éducation et un autel fut construit en son honneur à Kyoto.
Hauteur 22,5 cm (34,6 cm avec le socle). Le témoin d’échelle sur la dernière photographie est un petit modèle d’un briquet d’une marque connue de tous.
Bon état si ce n’est un manque ancien au sommet sur le côté droit et une usure importante de la polychromie ; rien d’anormal par rapport au grand âge de cette très belle pièce et sans incidence sur la belle esthétique.

Japan, early Edo period, 17th-18th centuries, very old and superb polychrome wooden mask from the Noh Theater depicting Tenman Tenjin (or Sugawara no Michizane), a poet, intellectual and high-ranking court administrator in the Heian period, who was mistreated and exiled, but received spectacular revenge beyond the grave when he was deified. He became the patron-god of education and an altar was built in his honor in Kyoto.
Height 22.5 cm (34.6 cm with base). The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small model of a well-known brand of lighter.
Good condition except for an old missing piece at the top on the right-hand side and significant wear to the polychromy; nothing abnormal given the great age of this beautiful piece and with no impact on its aesthetics.
