Papouasie- Nouvelle-Guinée, région du moyen Sepik, peuple Mindinbit (Iatmul), importante et spectaculaire figure d’ancêtre anthropomorphe dans l’esprit des installations faîtières qui se trouvaient au sommet des habitations.


Ce poteau en bois sculpté figure un être féminin agenouillé surmonté d’un crocodile. Ce saurien incarne l’esprit du fleuve à l’origine du clan. Les yeux du visages sont représentés par des cauris (coquillages autrefois utilisés comme monnaie).


Le travail est superbe, d’autant plus beau qu’il est magnifié par les belles proportions de l’ensemble et la polychromie bien conservée.

Hauteur 96 cm. Bon état si ce n'est de légères usures normales et un manque sans incidence à l'arrière de la base.

Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik region, Mindinbit people (Iatmul), a prominent and spectacular figure of anthropomorphic ancestor in the spirit of the apex installations at the top of dwellings. This carved wooden post depicts a kneeling female being surmounted by a crocodile. This saurian embodies the spirit of the river at the origin of the clan. The eyes of the faces are represented by cowries (shells formerly used as money). The work is superb, all the more beautiful as it is magnified by the beautiful proportions of the set and polychrome well preserved.

Height 96 cm. Good condition if it is slight normal wear and a lack without incidence at the back of the base.
